Alpha Phi Omega is the international, co-ed service fraternity that sets the standard for campus-based volunteerism. For three-quarters of a century, Alpha Phi
Omega has positively influenced the lives of collegiate students, and greatly improved the quality of life for many individuals in need. Nearly 300,000 students
have been initiated into Alpha Phi Omega since our founding in 1925, and our current Membership exceeds 17,000 nationwide. Alpha Phi Omega is a
National Service Fraternity. Our purpose is to develop leadership, promote friendship, and to provide service to the community. We bring together people of
different religions, racial and ethnic groups, gender, and personal circumstances, who all want to improve their lives and the lives of others through service.
Alpha Phi Omega was founded at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1925. Since that time, it has grown to more than 240,000 Brothers and
over 670 chapters around the world, making it the world's largest Greek letter Fraternity.
Beta Beta was the first chapter of Alpha Phi Omega in Michigan. It was installed at Michigan State University on April 24, 1937 by H. Roe Bartle, the National
President. There were 37 charter members who elected Dick Hammerstein as the first chapter president. The scouting advisor was Clarence "Chief" Nietz, Scout
Executive of the Chief Okemos Council. He holds the unchallenged record for active participation in Beta Beta; he served as advisor from our founding until
his passing in August, 1974. The spirit of scouting lives on in his memory.
The Beta Beta Chapter will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary on March 24, at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing, Michigan.
